Tree planting at Lake Baikal

Rotarians of the ICC Russian Federation – Italy/Malta/San Marino took part in the International Ecological project of the Rotary E-Club Siberia on lake Baikal.

Lake Baikal is a unique resource of fresh water and the habitat of dozens endemic flora and fauna. It is the oldest and the deepest lake in the world. Since 1996, it has been in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage records.

Carefully protected, the eco-system of Baikal is constantly observed by specialists of several Nature reserves and National Nature Parks. However, the Climate changes and human activity are affecting the Lake.

In August 2024 Rotarians from sister Rotary clubs “RC Roma Foro Italico” and RC “St Petersburg White Nights” being also the participants of the ICC “Russian Federation – Italy/Malta/San Marino”, came to the shore of Baikal and planted larch trees on the Olkhon island.

It was important not only to plant, but also to water the trees for several days. And now we are
happy to confirm, that 27 trees out of 29 planted, are green and growing!
